Short-Term Medical in Texas: What You Need to Know

Quick answerShort-term medical plans are temporary, medically underwritten coverage. They are not ACA-qualified health plans, may exclude pre-existing conditions and have federal limits on how long they can last. They may fit healthy people with a temporary gap.

Where short-term plans fit

Short-term plans are usually used for a temporary gap — between jobs, before employer coverage starts, or before Medicare. Federal rules limit their initial term and total duration, so they are not a long-term replacement for most families.

Who should avoid short-term plans

If you have a significant medical history — such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, a recent hospitalization, pregnancy, ongoing treatment or a pending procedure — you will likely need an ACA Marketplace plan (also called Obamacare). Alternative products are generally not for people with health issues or for lower-income households who qualify for strong ACA subsidies.

*Some ACA plans in some areas have a small one-time enrollment fee due to little or no broker compensation. Agency enrollment fees never apply to Medicare products.
