The checklist
Work through each step with a licensed agent:
- Confirm written approval and effective date of the new plan
- Read exclusions, waiting periods and benefit limits
- Check doctors, hospitals and prescriptions
- Confirm how renewals and rate changes work
- Only then cancel the ACA plan, effective the day the new plan starts
- Mark your calendar for the next ACA Open Enrollment in case you need to return
When not to switch
If you have a significant medical history — such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, a recent hospitalization, pregnancy, ongoing treatment or a pending procedure — you will likely need an ACA Marketplace plan (also called Obamacare). Alternative products are generally not for people with health issues or for lower-income households who qualify for strong ACA subsidies.

*Some ACA plans in some areas have a small one-time enrollment fee due to little or no broker compensation. Agency enrollment fees never apply to Medicare products.
