Medically Underwritten Health Plans: Lower Premiums If You Qualify

Quick answerMedically underwritten plans review your health history before approving you. Because they accept only applicants who meet health guidelines, premiums for those who qualify can be significantly lower than unsubsidized ACA plans. They are not ACA-qualified and not everyone is approved.

What underwriting means

You answer health questions on the application. The carrier may approve, decline, or exclude certain conditions. Answer every question truthfully — misstatements can lead to claims being denied or coverage being rescinded.

Not a fit if you have health issues

If you have a significant medical history — such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, a recent hospitalization, pregnancy, ongoing treatment or a pending procedure — you will likely need an ACA Marketplace plan (also called Obamacare). Alternative products are generally not for people with health issues or for lower-income households who qualify for strong ACA subsidies.
