Lower Income or Pre-Existing Conditions? The ACA Is Your Option

Quick answerIf your income is lower or you need pre-existing conditions covered, an ACA Marketplace plan — also known as Obamacare — is your only real option. It is the only individual coverage that must accept every applicant regardless of health history, and the only one that offers income-based premium tax credits.

Guaranteed acceptance — only on the Marketplace

ACA plans cannot turn you down, charge you more, or exclude treatment because of your health history. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy — none of it affects your eligibility or your premium.

Non-ACA products work the opposite way: they medically underwrite, which means they can decline applicants, exclude conditions or cap benefits. For anyone with a significant medical history, those products are simply not a safe substitute.

Subsidies — only on the Marketplace

Premium tax credits that lower your monthly cost exist only on the ACA Marketplace. For 2026 coverage, households under 400% of the federal poverty level generally qualify, and the credit can reduce premiums dramatically.

No alternative product offers any subsidy. If you qualify for meaningful tax credits, the Marketplace will almost always be your lowest-cost real coverage.
