Medicare Advantage HMO vs. PPO in Katy, Texas

Katy spans three counties, and Medicare Advantage plans are sold by county. Before comparing an HMO against a PPO, confirm which plans are available at your home address and whether your doctors and hospitals participate in each plan's current network.

How HMO and PPO plans generally differ

An HMO generally requires you to use network providers and often requires a referral from a primary care physician before seeing a specialist. A PPO generally lets you see out-of-network providers at a higher cost and usually does not require referrals. The specific rules depend on each plan's documents, not the label alone.

  • Referrals: HMOs commonly require them; PPOs commonly do not
  • Out-of-network care: HMOs generally cover emergencies only; PPOs cover it at higher cost sharing
  • Costs: compare premiums, copays, and the plan's medical out-of-pocket maximum — not just the premium

Why your Katy county matters

A plan available in Harris County may not be sold in Fort Bend or Waller County, and networks differ by plan even within the same county. A hospital being nearby does not mean it participates in a particular plan. Confirm participation in the carrier's current provider directory before enrolling.

What to review before you decide

Read each plan's Evidence of Coverage and provider directory. Check your prescriptions against the plan's formulary, review prior-authorization rules, and confirm your doctors by name. We can discuss plans we represent by phone; we do not offer every plan available in Katy.

Common questions

Is a PPO always better than an HMO?

No. A PPO offers more flexibility but can carry higher premiums or cost sharing. The right fit depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel habits and budget. Compare the actual plan documents rather than the network label.

Can I keep my Katy doctors on a Medicare Advantage plan?

Only if they participate in that plan's network. Confirm each doctor and hospital by name in the carrier's current directory before enrolling; directories change and a past visit does not guarantee future participation.

When can I switch between an HMO and a PPO?

Generally during Medicare Annual Enrollment (October 15–December 7) or, if you already have Medicare Advantage, during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (January 1–March 31). Special Enrollment Periods may apply after certain life events.
