Medicare Supplement Plan G vs. Plan N in Katy, Texas
Plan G and Plan N are the two Medigap options most Katy residents ask about. Both are standardized by federal law, so the benefits for each letter are the same regardless of insurer — but premiums, underwriting rules and household discounts differ by company.

What Plan G and Plan N have in common
Both plans work alongside Original Medicare and let you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare. Both leave the annual Part B deductible to you. Neither covers prescription drugs — a separate Part D plan is needed for that.
Where they differ
Plan N can require copayments for some office visits and emergency-room visits, and it does not cover Part B excess charges (amounts a provider may charge above the Medicare-approved amount, where permitted). Plan G covers those items after the Part B deductible. In exchange, Plan N premiums are often lower than Plan G premiums from the same insurer — compare actual quotes rather than assuming.
- Plan G: broader cost coverage after the Part B deductible
- Plan N: copays on some visits; no coverage of Part B excess charges
- Both: same standardized benefits from every insurer offering them
Enrollment timing and underwriting
Your federal six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B — during it, an insurer cannot use health underwriting. Outside that window and other guaranteed-issue rights, insurers can ask health questions and can decline coverage. Texas does not add a broad annual open-enrollment right for Medigap, so timing matters.
Common questions
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Medigap plan?
Possibly, but outside protected trial rights and guaranteed-issue situations, medical underwriting applies and acceptance is not guaranteed. Discuss timing before leaving an Advantage plan.
Do Plan G and Plan N cover my prescriptions?
No. Medigap plans do not include Part D drug coverage. You would enroll in a separate stand-alone Part D plan.
Why do premiums differ if benefits are standardized?
Insurers set their own premiums and may use different pricing methods (attained-age, issue-age or community-rated). Standardization covers benefits, not price.
