Back-to-School Health Coverage Checklist for Katy, TX Families

Published August 1, 2027 · By Joseph Stevens

Quick answerBefore school starts, Katy-area parents should confirm four things: your pediatrician and nearest urgent care are still in-network (networks changed for many plans this year), college students have coverage that works in their college town, kids who aged out of CHIP or a parent's plan have a replacement, and your plan still fits the family's prescriptions. August is the calm before the fall enrollment rush — the best time to fix problems.

Check your pediatrician and urgent care

Networks shift every January, and summer is when families discover a pediatrician near Katy Mills or a favorite urgent care on the Grand Parkway is suddenly out-of-network. Verify before the first sick visit of the school year, not during it.

College students: does your plan travel?

  • Many Katy-area ACA plans have limited networks outside the Houston area
  • Students at Texas schools may need a plan with a network in their college town
  • School-sponsored plans can be good value — compare them against staying on the family plan
  • Students can stay on a parent's plan until 26, but network access is the real question

Kids aging out of CHIP or turning 18

A child aging out of CHIP or losing other coverage triggers a Special Enrollment Period. Lower-income Katy families should also re-check CHIP and Children's Medicaid eligibility — income limits are higher than most parents expect.

Why August is the month to act

October through December is enrollment season chaos — Medicare AEP and ACA Open Enrollment back to back. August is when we have time to do a careful family review: networks, prescriptions, and whether splitting family members across different solutions would lower your total premium.

FAQs

Can my college student stay on our family plan?

Yes, until age 26. The bigger question is whether the plan's network covers doctors near their school — many Houston-area plans don't. We check both.

My kid aged out of CHIP. Now what?

That opens a Special Enrollment Period — you have 60 days to enroll them in a new plan. Depending on income, they may qualify for a low-cost ACA plan.

Do school sports physicals count as covered visits?

Annual wellness visits are covered at 100% on ACA plans, and a sports physical can often be done as part of one. Confirm with your pediatrician's office when booking.
