ACA Open Enrollment in Katy: What to Do Before November 1

Open Enrollment runs November 1 through January 15 — and the single biggest factor in your premium is your estimated household income. October is prep month for Katy families. Here's the local playbook.

Quick answerEnroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1; the final deadline is January 15 (coverage starts February 1). Gather your income documents in October, check whether your current plan's network still includes your Katy doctors, and don't wait for the December rush. Lower-income households and anyone with pre-existing conditions: the Marketplace is your only real option — and it's a good one.

The dates that matter

Open Enrollment is the once-a-year window for most people to pick an ACA plan.

  • November 1 — Open Enrollment opens on HealthCare.gov
  • December 15 — deadline for January 1 coverage
  • January 15 — final deadline (coverage starts February 1)
  • Moved, married, lost coverage? Special Enrollment runs year-round

Gather these in October

A prepared application takes 20 minutes; an unprepared one takes weeks of back-and-forth.

  • Your best estimate of next year's household income (wages, self-employment, retirement, unemployment)
  • A list of every prescription your family takes
  • Your must-keep doctors and hospitals
  • Last year's 1095-A if you had a Marketplace plan

Re-check the subsidy math

Households under roughly 400% of the federal poverty level generally qualify for meaningful premium tax credits — and for lower-income families, the Marketplace is the only option that guarantees coverage regardless of health history. Above that line, the math gets tighter and healthy families should also price alternatives (not ACA-compliant; not everyone qualifies). We run both sides so you see the real comparison.

Don't auto-renew blind

HealthCare.gov will auto-renew you, but your plan's price, network and drug list all change January 1. A 20-minute review in November beats a surprise bill in January — especially if your plan dropped Houston Methodist West, Memorial Hermann Katy or your pediatrician.
