Dental insurance waiting periods explained
How dental waiting periods work, which services they apply to, and options with no waiting period.
What a waiting period is
A waiting period is the time between your plan start date and the date certain services are covered. Preventive care is usually covered right away, while basic and major services may wait several months on some plans.
Plans without waiting periods
Some dental plans and dental discount programs have no waiting period for major work. They can cost more or have lower first-year limits, so compare the full picture.
Proof of prior coverage
If you had dental insurance recently, some carriers waive waiting periods when you show proof of prior coverage. Keep your old ID card or a letter from your previous plan.

Supplemental and limited-benefit plans are not a substitute for comprehensive major-medical health insurance and do not meet ACA minimum essential coverage requirements.
